Preparing Youth for Disasters

National Preparedness Month (NPM) is recognized in the United States each September to promote family and community disaster planning now and throughout the year. As countries around world continue to respond to COVID-19, there is no better time to be prepared. This year, each week has a different topic.

Week 4 looks at "teaching youth about preparedness".

Design thinking is about promoting an innnovation mindset, and using collaborative approaches to complex problems. It can also empower students and their communities to build back efficacy after a disaster, and build resilience overall. In this episode we speak with educator Maggie Favretti about how she is applying design thinking principles in communities across Puerto Rico and beyond. With over 30 years of award-winning teaching, Maggie continues to engage high school students in learning by doing and making the world a better place. Her approach is helping build resilient communities by creating opportunities for young people to solve real world problems.
